The word Geisha means 'artist'。Gei (芸) stands for 'art', and sha (者) for 'person'。Geisha are woman, trained in a number of traditional skills such as Japanese traditional dances, singing, calligraphy, playing musical instruments, floral design, wearing Kimono, performing tea ceremonies, conversation, etiquette and manners。
A real Geisha is a manifestation of beauty, elegance, artistic talent, impeccable etiquette and refinement。Through years of training and meditation, Geisha nurture their sensuality and femininity。They know how to create a fantasy world for their guests, to enjoy a pleasant evening after their long day at work。
Also called Geigi (芸妓 / 藝妓) and Geiko (芸子)。
Please, try to keep in mind that real Geisha will refuse any requests for sexual services or escorting!
Maiko (舞子) are Geisha apprentices。
They are supposed to look pretty and cute, with lots of colors in their attire, displaying the youth of femininity。They are more reserved in conversation than Geisha at Ozashiki, but they do interact in playing traditional Japanese games, instruments and dance。
Successful Maiko are expected to be adorable with their colorful and youthful appearances and and playful personalities。It's their display of joy that makes the hardest working business person forget abut all the hardship they have to endure day by day。
Oiran (花魁) and Tayuu (太夫), used to be high class courtesans in Japan。
The Oiran were considered a type of "Yuujo" (遊女) "woman of pleasure", or prostitute。However, they are distinguished from the Yuujo in that they were entertainers rather than simply sex-workers, and many became celebrities of their times outside the pleasure districts。Their art and fashions often set trends among the wealthy, and because of this, cultural aspects of Oiran traditions continue to be preserved to this day。
The Oiran arose in the Edo period (1600-1868)。The rise of the Geiko (Geisha) ended the era of the Oiran as sex workers。These days Oiran are merely played by Kabuki actors such as Onnagata or Yakusha, without any sexual service as a matter of course。
Do not confuse them with Geisha in future anymore, please。
